Biography

Lois Freda Lewis Proffitt, 82, of Ridge Farm, passed away at 11:44 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2015, at her daughter’s home in Huntsville, Ala.

Mrs. Proffitt was born Nov. 20, 1932, in Ridge Farm, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Steeples) Ankrum.

She married Art Lewis on Nov. 29, 1954, and they spent 38 years together until he passed away in 1992. She later married Orville Proffitt on Jan. 19, 2001. They spent six years together until he passed away in 2007.

She is survived by two sons, Terry (Valerie) Lewis of Echo, Ala., and David (Valerie) Lewis of Georgetown; one daughter, Brenda (Chuck) Langloss of Huntsville, Ala.; one stepdaughter, Sara (Carroll) Baird of Indianola; one stepson, Ronald Proffitt of Rantoul; three sisters, Shirley Beckett of Sanford, Fla., Sandy (Mitchell) Valangeon of Westville and Doris (John) McCoy of Gosport, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brother, Jake Ankrum; and sister, Donna J. Kinney.

Mrs. Proffitt was a school bus driver and a cook for the Ridge Farm School District, where she was given an award for protecting her students and keeping them safe. She was a member of Eastview Church of Christ in Danville. Lois was awarded the Ridge Farm Citizen of the Year Award in 2008 for helping with the CRIS Senior Meals and volunteering to do whatever was asked of her.

She spent her winters with her daughter and family in Tennessee and then Alabama for the last several winters and would return to Illinois for the summers to take care of her family and friends. Lois enjoyed reading and watching Westerns. She also enjoyed crocheting and giving her creations away. Her greatest joys were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lois was loved by many and was a mother to all that knew her. She dedicated her life to taking care of others.

A Celebration of Mrs. Proffitt’s Life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Ridge Farm Friends Church with Pastor Dennis Floyd officiating. Visitation will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will follow the service in Crown Hill Cemetery in Ridge Farm.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. The family has entrusted the Blurton Funeral Home in Hoopeston to assist them in honoring Mrs. Proffitt’s life. Memories or photos may be shared with the family on her memorial page at: www.blurtonfuneralhomes.com.
