Biography

John Annand, the tenth child of Alexander and Barbara (Hutchison) Annand, was born Dec. 5, 1850 in Cruden Bay, Aberdeen, Scotland. He had nine sisters and four brothers. He was grain miller and worked for local millers. On June 25, 1875 he married Ann Byres, his boss's daughter. On June 30, John and Ann, along with his brother James and his wife Jeannie Auld, set sail aboard the ship Invercargill to New Zealand to begin their married life. The trip across the Atlantic Ocean took three months during which John kept a daily log of the events aboard the ship. Many passengers experienced sea sickness for days on end. They grew weak from vomiting and not eating. A few babies were born on the trip and young children died. The men were expected to do odd tasks around the ship, but life became rather boring. When they were feeling better, they passed the time singing, reading and visiting. On Oct. 5, 1875 they landed at Port Chalmers, Dunedin, New Zealand. John found work and he and Ann began married life which lasted for 46 years. The family grew to include eleven children over 21 years. John faced several deaths in his family - their grandson Ivan died when he was two, his daughter Ann died of Bright's disease and his son George lost his life at the Battle of Somme in France in Oct. 1916.

John moved to three different communities to seek job opportunities. First he moved his family to Oamaru where he found work as a miller and then a grocer. The family remained there for twenty years before they moved back to Dunedin where John managed a brickworks. John and some of his family made one more move to Timaru where he was employed as an oat miller. It was a job he had until 1921, when he died from lobar pneumonia and cardiac failure. He was buried on July 17, 1875 in Timaru, New Zealand.
