Biography

Francois L'Egare' lived in Lyons, France during the latter part of the 17th Century, which was under severe religious persecution of French Protestants (Huguenots), a period leading up to, and extending after the Revolcation of the EDICT OF NANTES. [THE EDICT OF NANTES was issued by Henry IV, of France, in 1598, and gave his Protestant subjects freedom to practice their religion. It was revoked by Louis XIV in 1685, and led to the cruel persecution and exodus of many Protestant (Huguenot) families.] Many Huguenot families, member of the Reformed French Church, gave up their homes, abandoning everything, and moved away from France during this period.

Among the refugees was Francois L'Egare', who moved to England with his wife, Ann Lancois and their three sons, Francois Solomon, Daniel James, and Stephen John. They were naturalized in England as of March 8, 1682. A few years later, Francois L'Egare', Goldsmith, and two sons were admitted to the colony of Massachusetts on February 1, 1691. About 150 French families came to Massachusetts after the Revocation of the EDICT OF NANTES, in France.

Francois L'Egare' purchased property, 10.5 acres, about twelve mmiles south of Boston, at Braintree, Norfolk or Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

Francois died in Braintree, Massachusetts on December 30, 1711, at the age of seventy-five. The Will of Francois L'Egare', The Goldsmith, of Braintree, Massachusetts, dated February 3, 1711, probated January 26, 1712, mentions his wife, Ann and his sons, Solomon, in Carolina, and Daniel.
