Thomas Roscoe Ansdell was christened on 28 Aug 1831 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot. His father's occupation was given as farmer, and the family's address as Bold.

By June 6th 1841, the family were living at Sutton Place Farm, in the township of Sutton (and parish of Prescot). Thomas' father was a farmer. Thomas and one brother, Richard, were still with their parents. There were also two female servants in the household - Sarah Burrow and Mary Fogg - and one male servant, Mathew Stock.

Thomas' mother died in 1841, aged 50, and was buried on 30 Jul 1841 at Farnworth Chapel; her address was given as Sutton.

Thomas' father married Mary (Elton) Ditchfield in 1848 at St Philip's Church in Liverpool.

By March 30th 1851, Thomas was living with his father and stepmother in Sutton. His father was working as a farmer. Thomas was an apprentice blacksmith.

Thomas' father probably died in 1855, aged 70, and was buried on 5 Aug 1855 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease; his address was given as Widnes.

By April 7th 1861, Thomas was living in Derbyshire and working as a blacksmith.
