Biography

1877 birth: She was born in Vilnius on 1 Feb 1876 in the Julian calendar, which I believe is 13 Feb 1877 in the Gregorian calendar now used.

As recalled by her granddaughter Martha, and supported by the records on LitvakSIG, Yetta's mother passed away in birthing Yetta, and Yetta's father then married Yetta's mother's sister.

Maiden name?: There are four records of her on LitvakSIG. On all four, her surname transliterated from Russian into English is Anshprun. Her maiden name is recorded various ways in the American records:

  • Anstrun (or Anstrum?) on her son's marriage certificate
  • Anstrom on her daughter Yetta's marriage certificate.
  • Anstrum, on her husband's death certificate
  • Handstrum, on her son's birth certificate.
  • Anthrum and Ansbrun, on her sister Leie's passenger list arriving in NY

1901 marriage: She married Meyer Isaac Plen in Vilnius on 23 Apr 1901 in the Julian calendar, which I believe is 6 May 1901 in the Gregorian calendar.

1956 death: I do not know when she died. I am confident it was after 1952, and likely before 1958. (Her granddaughter Martha recalls that when Yetta was sick she stayed at a house that Martha's family moved to after Martha turned 13. Martha was born in 1939. Thus I conclude that Yetta was still alive in 1952. Martha recalls that Yetta did not come to Martha's wedding, at her age 19. So it seems likely that Yetta passed before 1958.)

Update: Beth David says she is buried in the Friedman plot, and died 1956. She appears in the NYC death index under the name "Yetta Plak". It says she died 27 Apr 1956 in Brooklyn.

Sec 4, Blk 0, Plot 2495, Row LWR, Grave RT#8. Plot owner Herman M Friedman. Beth David Cemetery, Elmont, NY.

Her granddaughter Roz recalls that Yetta had Parkinson's disease.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Yetta by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Yetta:
