Biography

Abel Ansley was born in 1761, in Monmouth, New Jersey, a son of Thomas Ansley and Rebecca Cox. [1] Abel is a Direct Ancestor of American President James "Jimmy" Carter.

In 1768, Abel's father, Thomas Ansley moved his family to the Quaker Community of Wrightsboro, Georgia. As a Quaker, Thomas did not fight during the war. However, he supported the war effort as a forager and drover. As a result, Ansley received land grants totaling 2,400 acres after the war ended. Thomas was a Justice of the Peace and a Member of the House of General Assembly. [2]

Abel's father is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolutionary War as DAR Ancestor #A002852. DAR Records indicate that Thomas died June 14, 1809, in Warren county, Georgia and that his wife's name was Rebecca Cox. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of Abel Ansley and Lydia Morris. [3] Descendants of this family are eligible to join the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Old Rock House, in Thomson, Warren county, Georgia, was built in 1785, by Thomas Ansley, and is the house that Abel grew up in. On the National Register of Historic Places, the house is heralded as the “oldest stone house in Georgia, with its original floor plan intact.” (A picture of it may be seen here: https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-rock-house) Abel lived and died in this home and is buried in the Ansley Family Cemetery, also known as Rock House Cemetery. Note: The home is in McDuffie County, which was created on October 18, 1870. [4]
