Biography

Flag of Cornwall (St Piran's Cross, pre-1838)
James Anstey was born in Cornwall, England.

James Anstey was baptized at St. Gluvias, Cornwall, England, on 27th March 1831. He was the son of James Anstey, Labourer of St Gluvias, and his wife, Ann. [1] [2]

Marriage. In 1853, James married Fanny Cornish. [3]

Emigration to Australia. Fanny and James arrived in the Colony of New South Wales on board the Ellenborough which landed at Sydney on 12th October, 1853. James had paid £4 for their passage as Assisted Immigrants. They didn't have any relatives in the Colony.

The Immigration Inspection list, dated the 14th October 1853, shows Fanny as 28 years old, of Penryn, Cornwall, the daughter of James and Ann Cornish who lived in Penryn. Fanny could read but not write. [4]

James could read and write. Their Church of England faith was noted. James was younger than Fanny, being recorded as a 22-year-old Agricultural laborer from 'St Gluvis', Cornwall. He was the son of John and Ann, with his father still living in Cornwall.

According to his obituary, after they landed in Sydney, New South Wales in 1853, James and Fanny stayed there a few years and then moved to Wollongong. After nearly 25 years, they relocated to Lismore in 1883. [5]

Personal.;
The many friends of Mr. James Anstey, a very old and highly respected resident of Girard's Hill, will regret to hear that he is laid up, and on Saturday and Sunday his condition occasioned the greatest anxiety, so much that his relatives were hastily summoned. The attack is one that might be expected at his years (77), and accelerated by a weak heart. On Sunday evening special prayers were offered in St. Andrew's Church of England for Mr. Anstey's restoration. On Monday and yesterday the patient has continued to make progress, and all who know him wish him a speedy recovery. [6]

He passed away Sunday, 31st May, 1908, his death registered Lismore, New South Wales.[7]
