Biography

Samuel Antcliff was born in Kneesall, Nottinghamshire, England, on 19 February 1846.[1] The birth was registered in the Southwell registration district, Nottinghamshire, in the first quarter of 1846,[2] and Samuel, the son of William and Sarah Antcliff, was christened in Kneesall on 22 March 1846.[3] His parents were William Antcliff and Sarah Turner. [1][4][5]

The 1861 census recorded Samuel Antcliff, age 16, born in Kneesall, Nottinghamshire, in Laxton, Nottinghamshire, in the household of farmer John Keyworth. Samuel was unmarried and was working as a carter; three other male members of the household were similarly employed.[6]

Samuel Antcliff served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 1864
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 13th Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry

His family emigrated to America when he was about 16, in 1862, and settled in Manchester Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan.[1][4] In 1864 he enlisted in the Union Army. He served in Company E, 13th Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry and participated in General William Tecumseh Sherman's "march to the sea."[4]

He was married to Sarah Ada Johnson, said to be a daughter of William Johnson and a native of the state of New York.[4]' There is conflicting information about the date of their marriage. History of Washtenaw County, Michigan, page 1333, states that they married in 1869, but this marriage date seems unlikely if she was only 26 in 1880, as indicated by the 1880 U.S. Census. The Washtenaw County Michigan, Dibean Marriage Index lists the marriage of Samuel Antcliff and Sarah A. Johnson in Washtenaw County on 10 March 1881, [7] but Samuel and Sarah Antcliff were recorded in the 1880 census as husband and wife. The marriage record of 10 March 1881 may be for different people. It names the parties to the marriage as Samuel Antcliff, 28, and Sarah A. Johnson, 20, both residents of Manchester, Michigan. Samuel was a farmer, native of England, and Sarah was a native of South Schodack, New York. Witnesses to the marriage were George Ingraham and Sarah Antcliff, both of Manchester.[8]

The 1880 U.S. Census recorded 33-year-old farmer Samuel Antcliff and his 26-year-old wife Sarah Antcliff in Manchester Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan, with their 1-year-old son William J. Antcliff. [9] Samuel was a native of England, while Sarah and William were born in New York state.

Samuel Antcliff, age 55 and a native of England, married Nita Booth, age 44 and a native of Michigan, in Windsor, Essex County, Ontario, Canada, on 27 August 1901. Both were described as residents of "Detroit" (referring to Detroit, Michigan, which is across the river from Windsor, Ontario); Samuel was described as a farmer. Samuel's parents were named as Wm. Antcliff and Sarah Turner; Nita's parents were Argel Wells and Melissa Farmer.[5]

Samuel Antcliff died in Norvell Township, Jackson County, Michigan, on 9 August 1918, at age 72. He was survived by his wife Nita Antcliff.[1]
