Younger sister of Susan B. Anthony. Mary Anthony was an early supporter of women's suffrage, and signed the Declaration of Sentiments at the Rochester meeting held after the Seneca Falls Convention August 1, 1848. She was also a teacher and longtime principal in the Rochester, N.Y. school district. Although history has placed her in the shadow of her more famous elder sister, Mary Anthony was actively involved in suffrage in her own right. She organized Rochester's Political Equality Club, of which she was president for eleven years. She also cared for her sister's household in addition to being a caregiver for various family members, thus allowing her sister to continue her work.
