Biography

Henry Colden Antill was born in 1823 at Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Australia. He was the third child and second son of Major Henry Colden Antill, who was the aide-de-camp to Governor Lachlan Macquarie, and his Australian-born wife, Eliza Wills.[1] He was christened in St John's Church of England, Camden, New South Wales on 7th April 1826.

Henry married Teresa Hatch on 1st January 1851 in St Matthew's Church of England, Queanbeyan, New South Wales.[2][3]

He inherited Coldenham at Picton when his father passed away in 1852. Henry and Teresa's first two children were born there in 1852 and 1854. By 1857, the family was living back at Queanbeyan.

Children of this marriage were:

Henry turned out to be the 'black sheep' of the Antill family. Although he had means, he turned to crime, being convicted of stealing from a shepherd, unlawful use of a horse, and robbery under arms. It appears that he was 'exiled' to New Zealand, returning in 1876, a free man. His wife, who Henry had abandoned with their six children, took him to court in November 1876, seeking maintenance and child support. The court ruled in Teresa's favour, however when payment was not forthcoming, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He had 'shot though' however. He was found at Picton in 1880 and brought before the bench. Once more refusing to pay anything, he was taken by the police to face trial in Sydney for "disobeying an order of the court." Found guilty, he was imprisoned until he 'paid up'. There is no evidence that he did pay, however he was released from prison.[10]

Henry Jnr passed away on 17th March 1913 at Granville, New South Wales. He was buried in the family crypt at Jarvisfield.[11]
