Biography

Icel is the first identifiable member of a dynasty that would rule the kingdom of Mercia, possibly the leader of the first party to arrive in England from the Anglian territory, now Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic coast of Germany.

Occupation: King of Mercia, ca 527-?

Also known as Isung (Ichel) the Angle ( perhaps Angel) of Mercia.

Icel is said to have been a King of the Iclingas. He is listed at [1]

The Mercian dynasty was named after him.

Iclingas

"The Iclingas (also Iclings or House of Icel) were a dynasty of Kings of Mercia during the 7th and 8th centuries, named for Icel or Icil, great-grandson of Offa of Angel, a legendary or semi-legendary figure of the Migration Period who was in turn made to descend from Woden by the Anglo-Saxon royal genealogies. The Iclingas reached the height of their power under Offa of Mercia (r. 757–796), who achieved hegemony over the other Anglo-Saxon states, and proclaimed himself "King of the English", but the dynasty lost control of Mercia soon after his death. Ap Eomer-1 and Mercia-228 appear to represent the same person because: They're the same person. This appears to be where the duplicates stop when going backwards through time, so I would like to point out that it seems a bit weird to see the Mercian royal family use Welsh naming conventions (Ap_Eomer-1), so regardless of the state of the respective profiles of this batch of people, I've proposed merging them all into the Mercia-### profiles because I think it would probably make more sense name-wise. Do it however you want. I'm simply pointing out doubles and trying to help. Thanks.

Edit: When the profiles are eventually merged, I would propose that the family name of Icel's descendants be changed to Iclingas or Icling. While they are generally synonomous with the Mercian throne, they didn't have a monopoly on it.
