Biography

Taza was born in 1842 in Arizona Territory to parents Cochise Apache and Dos Teh Sey Apache. Taza Apache looked like his grandfather, Mangas Coloradas, but was smaller in stature. His father, Cochise had raised him to succeed him as leader and proceeded to train him in his duties to his people, the Apache. And Taza was well educated. He wanted him to follow the road to peace. Cochise had taken a step further to extract allegiance to Taza to be sworn by the lieutenants and "captains" in command of the Apaches..

Despite the many wars Cochise was involved in, he really supported peace. Cochise showed Taza the locations of mountain passes and all the springs. Cochise even passed down his medicine. However the reservation in Arizona failed, due to ranchers and mining claims wanting the land the reservation was on. Taza later had to agree to lead the Apaches to San Carlos. But alas only half of the people followed.

Taza passed away in 1876 apparently of pneumonia while in Washington, D.C. as a delegate. Some Apaches did not believe the diagnosis of pneumonia. He was only able to lead the Apache for 2 years. He is buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
