Biography

Immigration to the United States

On 1 April 1891, Esther (using the name Ernestine) left Hamburg on the steamship Sultan bound for the Port of Hull near Kingston upon Hull, England. From there she would have traveled by train to Liverpool to continue her journey to North America. Esther was leading her five children on a three week journey from Kandau, Russia to Philadelphia. Their final destination was Chicago, where she presumably intended to join her husband Louis. The group included a young, unmarried woman named Betta. Betta's relationship to the family is unknown, but her assistance during the voyage was probably most welcome - considering the challenge of travel with very young children. [1]

" Betta (age 18) a "Fräulein"
" Cilly (age 11) a child ("Kind")

One week later on 8 April 1891, the party of 7 - all traveling under the same ticket (#6199) - left Liverpool on the SS Lord Gough, American Line for Philadelphia.[2]
