Biography

John Henry Appel, the son of Henry Apfel and Gertrude Schoepf, was born on or about February 4, 1837 in Licking Creek, Allegany County, Maryland.

In June, 1850, 13 year old Henry, along with Gertrude, Henry, Julius, and George, were found living in the Henry Apple household in District 8, Allegany County, Maryland. Henry was working as a stone cutter. [1] {See Research Note #3 below for full details}

John married Hannah L. Slider, daughter of William B. Slider and Rachel Elbin, in Morgan County, Virginia (later part of West Virgina) on June 19, 1860. [2]
Their children included

On February 14, 1865, John, a resident of Cumberland, Maryland, enlisted in Company K, 1st Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade, Maryland Calvary. John was discharged on June 28, 1865. [5]

In June, 1870, 33 year old John "Apple", a land-owning farmer, was living in Flintstone, Allegany County, Maryland with his wife, 34 year old Hannah, and children John, Frank, and Mary. [3]

In June, 1880, 45 year old John Appel, a farmer, was living in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland with his wife, 45 year old Hannah, and children John, Frank, Mary, Ruth, Hanna, Sarah, and Harriet. [4]

John married Nancy Elizabeth Kiefer about 1900.

In April 1910, 73 year old John Appel, a farmer, and his 30 year old wife Nancy, were living in Orleans Township, Allegany County, Maryland, with their children Alonzo, Hans and George. All 3 boys had attended school. [6]

John passed away at the age of 82 on or about July 22, 1919 in Little Orleans, Allegany, Maryland.
He was laid to rest in Dyche Cemetery, Doe Gully, Morgan County, West Virginia. [8]
