Biography

Obituary 18 Aug 1896 On Saturday Mr. Joseph Applebee, acolonist of 57 years, died at his residence, Port Gawler, at the age of 74 years. On arriving in South Australia he settled down at Bowden, and resided there for some years. He was a butcher, but not being able to find employment at his trade applied himself to the times and worked in any line of business. For several years he carried on brickmaking inFifth-street, Bowden, and on the discovery of gold in Victoria went there. On returning he resumed the brick business at Bowden, and over 40 years ago he went to Port Gawler and entered upon farming pursuits, which he had ever since continued in that district. He had a large circle of friends, and was highly respected. He leaves a wife, two sons, two daughters, thirty grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral took place at the Two Wells Cemetery on Sunday. The relatives at the grave were Mrs. Applebee (wife), Messrs. W. J. Applebee, and James Applebee, two daughters (Mary and Evatina), Mr. Geo. Hall (half-brother), Mrs. E. Biggs (half-sister), Mr. R. Daniels (son-in-law), Messrs. Joseph Applebee, A. and P. Daniels, and Misses Anne and Sarah Applebee (grandchildren). Amongst the number of persons who attended were Mr. and Mrs. Mattison, Mr. and Mrs. Temby, sen., Mr. and Mrs. Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Price, Mr. and Mrs. Frost, and Mr. and Mrs. Baily.[1]
