In 1909, Josephine received a $3000 insurance payment on the death of her husband, lost at sea, the previous year.

She passed away in 1931. Funeral services were held at the funeral parlors of O. B. Davis, Inc., conducted by the Rev. Watson Wallace, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Port Jefferson. Interment was in Cedar Hill cemetery. Mrs. Bayles was survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ada Schute, wife of Alonzo Schute, with whom she lived, and three brothers, John Appleby, George Appleby and Charles Appleby, all residents of Port Jefferson.
