Biography

John Alexander Appleby. [1][2][3][4]

Early Life Alexander Appleby was born March 4, 1839 in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada. He may have been the illegitimate son of a New Brunswick-born man named James Appleby and an Irish woman named Mary Butler. (See research notes below)

At some point before 1861, he was adopted by Aimé Doucet and Celeste DeGrace. [5]

Family Alexander married Anne Martin in Bathurst on October 9, 1860. [6] They had eight daughters and two sons.

Passed Away 4 May 1909. Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada [7]

Research Notes

There is a reference to an 1840 baptism record for Alexander on an old family history website, which can be found here. The specific reference is as follows: 'Le certificat de baptême de John-Alexander que l’on retrouve dans le livre des comptes de la fabriquede Nipisiquit (Bathurst) de 1840, indique que John-Alexander a été baptisé le 6 août 1840 à l’age de 17 mois. Et qu’il est un enfant illégitim e de James Appleby et Mary Butler. Le père Richard Vericker a indiqué en marge du document #7 qu’il est un « bastered ». Il a été adopté par Aimé Doucet # 41854et Céleste DeGrâce #41855de Bathurst, NB. (Document 3 & 4) On trouve aussi son age dans le document #8. Il a 22 ans et est adopté au recensement de Bathurst de 1861. 1861 – 22 = 1839 son année de naissance. Au recensement de 1871, document 9, il a 32 ans. Donc1971 – 32 = 1839. John-Alexander Appleby #2205 a marié Anne Martin #2578 (née: 31 sep 1838)
