Birth & Upbringing: Born 1899. He is the son of William Appleby and Helen Bartlett and was raised in Stains then Twickenham.
Military Service: He joined the Essex Regiment in 1917, but later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and trained as a pilot. He saw First World War action in France during which he sustained injuries from a plane crash.
Migration: Appleby migrated to Southern Rhodesia in January 1936 aboard the Union Castle Steamship, Comrie Castle[1] to join the BSA Police
Occupation: He joined the BSA Police in October 1919; Reg. No. 2123 and was posted to the districts. He was commissioned in September 1924 and served in most districts. He was an excellent shottist and sportsman. He saw further active service in the Second World War and had been instrumental in re-organising police forces in occupied territories under the British Military Administration. He returned to the BSA Police in June 1944 and was appointed Deputy Commissioner in September 1948 and serving as such until June 1954 retiring with the rank of Brigadier. [2]

Demise: James Appleby died in South Africa 7 July 1985. [5]. He was 86 years of age.
