Benjamin Applegate was born about 1686 and died 1753. He married Elizabeth Morford, who apparently died before him. She was a daughter of John Morford. Benjamin was a farmer and was constable in 1732 for New Windsor. In 1750, he was living in New Windsor, Middlesex County, New Jersey. His will was proved on May 16, 1753 in Nottingham Township, Burlington County, New Jersey and it bequeathed, "son Thomas, 5 shillings and demand of 13 pounds; sons Benjamin, William and Richard, each 5 shillings; daughter Johannah, a bed, real and personal estate. Son, Daniel, to be put to a trade, and when 21, to have 1/3 of the estate. daughter Alse, when 18, and daughter Jomine, the rest". Executors—Richard Sparkes and Walter Ward
To all persons who shall see these presents: Know ye that I, Thomas Appell, (Sinour) of Middletowne, in East Jersey, being sick of body but of sound mind and disposing, doe make and ordain this my last will and Testament.
I give to my daughter Elizabeth one shilling to be paid by my executrix, hereinafter named.
I give, bequeath and devise unto my sonn Beniamin, fifty acers of land to him and his heirs.
I giveth and devise to my sonn Richard and his heirs fifty acers of land, which aforementioned one hundred acres I had of my father-in-law Richard Gibbons, as will appear on my record, and lyes at the nutt-swamp, for the aforesaid Beniamin and Richard Applegate to possess and injoy the said land at the age of twenty one years, and if either of my said two sonns, is to say, Beniamin or Richard, should die before they attain the age of 21 years my will is the survivor of them shall have the aforementioned one hundred acers of land and their heirs.
Item I give, devise and bequeath to my loving wife, Johanah, all the land and real estate I have in the world (except one hundred acres before given) to her and her heirs forever.
I give, bequeath and devise my house and one hundred acers of before mentioned land given to my sonns, Beniamin and Richard, unto my loving wife, Johanah, till my sons Beniamin and Richard attain the age of twenty-one years.
After my debts and legacies are paid, I give unto my loving wife, Johanah, all my personal estate (effects) in the world, and I make my loving wife sole and whole executrix of this my last will and testament.
Dated in Middletown the first day of February in the year one thousand six hundred and ninty eight
Applegate — Thomas Applegate and Bartholomew Applegate are named in Freehold records in 1674. They were from Gravesend, Long Island. Though Bartholomew visited the county, it is not probable that he settled in it. Thomas Applegate m. Johannah Gibbons, d. of Richard, who was one of the twelve Monmouth Patentees. He d. about the beginning of the year 1699. He left sons, Thomas, John, Daniel, Joseph, Benjamin and Richard. His w., Johanna, survived him and she and her father, Richard Gibbons, were his executors. His will was dated Feb 1 1698, and proved Feb. 29, 1699. His eldest son Thomas, settled at Perth Amboy. He had w. Ann and sons Thomas, John, James and Andrew.
(III) Thomas Applegate, Jr., who settled in Middletown, married Johanna Gibbons, the daughter of the noted Richard Gibbons, on of the patentees for land at "Sandy Poin," (Sandy Hook), and on Raritan Bay. October 9, 1678, Gibbons made a bill of sale to one hundred acres of this land to "his son-in-law Thomas Applegate." Thomas Applegate died about 1699, leaving as his survivirs a wife, six sons and a daughter, whose names were: Thomas, John, Daniel, Joseph, Elizabeth, Benjamin and Richard. His will bears date February 1, 1698, naming his wife Johanna as execurtix, and bequeathed the old homested at Applegate Landing to his youngest child Richard.

First I give and bequeath to my well Beloved Son Thomas Appelgate the sum of five shillings and a demand of thirteen pounds as may appear in full of his portion
Second I give to my son Benjamin five shilling in full of his portion
Sixth I give to my daughter Johannah a feather bed in full of her portion
and all the rest of my estate both Rale and personall to be put out att Interest by my executors and they to put my son Daniel to a trade
and one third of said estate I give to son Daniel when he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years
and the second third of sd estate I give to my daughter Alse att the age of eighteen years
and all the rest of my estate I give to my daughter Jomone and if any of three children shall die before age than money to be divided equally between the other two last named
and I appoint Mr. Richard Sparks and Walter Ward [Wall] executors of this my last will and testament.
