Biography

Born about 1621. He was the son of John Appleton and Frances Crane.[1]

Admitted to Gray's Inn, 13 November 1638:[2]

Robert Apleton, son and heir of John A., of Chilton, Suffolk, Esq., deceased.

Marriage licence to Martha Moore, 27 April 1649: [3]

Appleton, Robert, of Gray's Inn, esq., bachelor, 28, and Mrs. Martha Moore, of Germaines, co. Norfolk, spinster, about 17, daughter of Thomas Moore, of same, gent., who consents — at Germaines parish church aforesaid. 27 April, 1649. F.

They had one daughter,

  1. Martha, who married Maurice Shelton of Barningham, Norfolk. Died before 1688.

Martha his first wife died on 10 October 1653, according to her gravestone in the chancel of the church at Wiggenhall St. Germans, Norfolk: [4]

In memory of Mrs. Martha Appleton, eldest daughter and coheir of Mr. Thomas Moor and Martha his wife, who died Oct. 10, 1653, wife of Robert Appleton, Esq;
with the arms of Appleton, argent, a fess ingrailed, sable, between three apples leafed, vert, impaling Moor, sable, a swan, argent, in a bordure ingrailed, or.

He married secondly Bridget, daughter of William Bull, clerk, before 1659. She was the widow of John Alabaster of Hadleigh. The 1664 Visitation of Suffolk gives the following children:[1]
