John Appleton was christened on 17 Dec 1826 at Prescot St Mary's. He was the son of Samuel and Martha Appleton. His father's occupation was given as tool maker, and the family's address as Prescot.
By June 6th 1841, the family were living in New Brighton, Eccleston, a little south of the highway from Prescot to St Helens. Samuel was a watch maker. John's brother James, now 17, was an apprentice painter. John, now 15, was an apprentice watch maker. There were three surviving younger children - ten-year-old Samuel junior from Samuel's first marriage, and Mary (aged 4) and Elizabeth (2) from his second one.
