Albany[30] ALFRED EDWARD APPLETON was born to Edward Appleton a Railway Pointsman, and Ruth (Veare) on 21st June, 1865 (a midsummers day) in Bromsgrove, near Birmingham, Worcestershire, England. He had an older sister Sarah, an older brother William, and two younger brothers Thomas and Edgar. After the death of his first wife Ruth, Edward married a widow with one son. She was apparently a 'typical stepmother', so as soon as possible the boys left home for Australia. It is thought that their older sister Sarah (married name Coleman), lived in Sydney. William also married, lived and died in Brisbane. Alfred and Thomas aged 18 and 16 years, left Plymouth, England, on the 'DUKE OF BEUCCLEUCH' with a Captain Winter, on 30th March, 1884. Shipping lists show that it arrived in Townsville on thhe 20th June, 1884. Thomas eventually settled in Perth, Western Australia. Alfred married Agnes Dunlop of Oxley, at the Wesleyan Church, Sherwood, on the 21st June,1890. On the marriage certificate it states that he lived at Wooloongabba and that his occupation was a builder. Agnes Dunlop was the eldest daughter of John Andrew Dunlop and Mary Ann Maria (Dudley). They were married in the old St. John's Protestant Cathedral, Brisbane, in 24th December, 1867. The Dunlop family home 'MONKTON' was built on twenty acres at Corinda. Nineteen of those acres now form Dunlop Park. John Andrew Dunlop and Mary Ann Maria Dunlop were both buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Sherwood Road, Sherwood. Alfred made several trips to England, and in 1898 he took his whole family of wife and four children. Relatives in England were quite surprised to find that his Australian wife was white and not black as they had all imagined. In England the family lived in 'MASLIN HOUSE', on the corner of Oldbury Road and Post Office Lane, Tewkesbury. This is where Mabel, Alfred (Jnr) and Lina were born. During this stay in England, Alfred invented and manufactured a Railway Guardsman Signal Lamp. The lamps he was to later manufactured in the factory at Sherwood were probably very similar to this one. A cousin living in England at this time was Percy Veare. Ten years were spent in Tewkesbury, then the family returned to Australia on the 'OMRAH', arriving back in Brisbane on the 17th December, 1908. It was also the 'OMRAH' that took Veare to the Middle East in the Field Ambulance with the 2nd Light Horse in the 1914-1918 war. The family then loved in a house in Hood Street, Sherwood, which was given to them by Agnes's father John Andrew Dunlop. The house was raised in order to accommodate this large family of seven children and their parents. The Sheet Metal, Lamp and Burner Factory was established next door. All members of the family were given various jobs and everyone contributed to the success of the business at the 'factory'. 'A.E. APPLETON TRAFFIC EQUIPMENT PTY. LTD.' at Darra, where most of the States' roadside warning lanterns and highway signs are manufactured. Alfred and Agnes had studies with a Mr. Reikie, a book-salesman from the Adventist Church in 1895, and after studies all Tuesday night, attended their first Sabbath Church Service the next Saturday. Meetings at 'ARLINGTON' resulted in the formation of the Sherwood Adventist Church. Agnes was about 54 years of age when she suffered a stroke which left her confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of her life. Lina cared lovingly for her parents until Agnes died in 1931 at 'ARLINGTON', Graceville. Agnes was buried in Dutton Park Cemetery. Grandson Allan Stevens and his father Walter Stevens share the same grave. Lina continued to care for Grandfather Appleton and Louise's daughter Barbara at 'ARLINGTON' the large two storey family homeona property situated between Verney Road East and Sandon Street, Graceville. After Lina married in 1934, Grandfather shared his home with his brother, Edgar Appleton. Grandfather's mode of transport to the factory at Sherwood was always on his bicycle. On the 5th June 1939, he married Florence Gordon and lived in a house in Jerrold Street, Sherwood. They later moved to Kathleen Street, Corinda. Alfred passed away in 1955 and was buried in Toowong Cemetery.
