Nathan was born in 1794 the Appleton family farm in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He was the son of Samuel Appleton and Mary White. He passed away in 1861.
In 1813 Nathan graduated from Bowdin College in Maine and he became a lawyer in 1816. He would go on to serve in the Maine House and Senate and as state Attorney General from 1835-1837.
