Helen died on January 18, 1944 in Warrawee, New South Wales, Australia, aged about 82.[3] She was buried at Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium, North Ryde, New South Wales.[4]

Research Notes

During an episode of Who Do You Think You Are, Peter Garrett discovered from a cousin that he was a direct descendant of Helen, and that Helen in turn was a descendant of her father, John Lythcote Applewhaite and her maternal grandfather, Henry Langdon, who was a butcher in the earliest days of the colony[5].

It was stated in the same program that her mother Lucy Hannah Langdon was one of the first people to be born in New South Wales, c1838, despite the fact that a settlement had been established on 26 Jan 1788[5].

She married Thomas William Garrett, a famous cricketer, and who had been a part of the Australian cricket team at the Oval in London when the match that England lost, that led to the "In Memoriam" notice being placed in the English press, "in remembrance of English cricket" and (ii) the creation of the Ashes and the subsequent Australian-England rivalry. The marriage occurred in Sydney at St. James Church.
