James was born in 1887[1] in Goole, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of William Appleyard and Frances Young. William was away in 1891 when the family lived in Airmyn, Yorkshire.[2]
At the time of the 1901 census James and his brother Stephen lived in Hull, Yorkshire.[3] In 1911 James boarded with the Fitton family in Crosby, Lincolnshire.[4]
