Biography

James R. was the son of Thomas Appling and wife Elizabeth. He was born in Virginia about 1798. He was named in his father's will in Amherst Co., Virginia in 1835. By 1837, he was living in Livingston Co., Kentucky. He signed a will in that county on 18 February of that year which was proved 3 April 1837. James was deceased by that time. The will contained some interesting facts about James. He indicated that he was a physician of the town of Salem. He was concerned about his medical books and his account books and his slave boy. He mentioned several tracts of land that he owned

No wife or descendants were named in the will, so it is assumed that he was a single man. There were some names, however: Gustavas Christian, Nephew Thomas Appling Jr., brother Susan Leek, sister Thomas Appling Sr., deceased father John Bayliss, friend George Washington, slave boy

The details of James' burial are not known.
