Biography

Agnelo Leoveqildo de Aragão was born on the 14th of December 1861 in the parish of Mãe de Deus in Povoacao, Portugal on the Sao Miguel Island in the Azores.[1] He was the legitimate child of Antonio Jacinto de Aragão and Francisca Constante de Aragão.[1].

Agnelo is listed as a soldier of 4th Company of the Guarda Fiscal, and at the time of the marriage living in Anguistas area of Horta, Faial. Leopoldina was considered a minor at 16 and had to get the permission of her widowed mother for this marriage. [2]

At the time of his passport application, Agnelo Leovigildo de Aragao knew how to read and write. He was 33 years old, naturally from Lomba do Carro in Povoacao. His parents were Antonio Jacinto de Amaral Aragao and Dona Francisca Aragao. He was listed as being a land owner. He and his family arrived in the US on August 19, 1895. Both leaving from the port of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island. They came with 3 children: 4 year old Antonio, 3 year old Maria, 1 year old Jayme (Jaime). All the children were born in Lomba do Carro in Povoacao.[3]

Life in the USA

The family lived in New Bedford, Massachusetts from at least 1906 until 1920.[4][5][6]
Agnelo and his son, Antonio, travelled back to the Azores and returned to the US on 9 Sep 1903[7]

Later Life and Death

Agnelo's date of death is not known. Leopolinda moved back to the Azores and died there. It is not known if Agnelo moved back or died in the US.
