Biography

Maria Aragão was born on the 11th of November 1891 in the parish of Mãe de Deus in Povoacao, Portugal on the Sao Miguel Island in the Azores.[1] She was the legitimate child of Agnelio Leovigido de Aragão, land owner, naturally of this parish, and Dona Leopoldina Pamplona de Aragão.[1].

Leopoldina Pamplona de Aragao, domestic homemaker, naturally of and married in the island of Terceira, but parishioners living in this parish, paternal granddaughter of Antonio Jacinto do Amaral Aragao and D. Francisc Constanca de Aragao and maternal granddaughter of Mateus Pamplona Machado Pamplona Corte-Real and D. Maria de Mendonca Pamplona Corte-Real. Godparents were Jose Felicio do Amaral Aragao, land owner, and his wife D. Ana Casmira de Mendonca[1]

In the family's passport record, Leopoldina Pamplona Corte-Real was listed as the child of Mateus Pamplona Machado Corte-Real and Dona Maria Rosa Machado Pamplona. She arrived in the US when she was 22 years old, married, and she was from Angra on Terceira island. She knew how to write and read and she is listed as "D. Leopoldina" (Lady) so she was well-off. At the time of his passport application, Agnelo Leovigildo de Aragao also knew how to read and write. He was 33 years old, naturally from Lomba do Carro in Povoacao. His parents were Antonio Jacinto de Amaral Aragao and Dona Francisca Aragao. He was listed as being a land owner. He and his family arrived in the US on August 19, 1895. Both leaving from the port of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island. They came with 3 children: 4 year old Antonio, 3 year old Maria, 1 year old Jayme (Jaime). All the children were born in Lomba do Carro in Povoacao.[2]

Mrs. Mary (Aragon) Costa, 84, of 141 Stackhouse St, South Dartmouth, dies yesterday at home after a brief illness. She was the widow of Frank Costa. Born in St. Michael, Azores, she lived in South Dartmouth for 60 years and was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Wilhermina DeCosta of Nantucket and Mrs. Gertrude Potter of Florida; four sons, Ernest and Gilbert, both of South Dartmouth, Fred of Yalesville, Conn and Frank of New Bedford; two brothers, Everett of Swansea and James of New Bedford; 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being made by Frate Funeral Home, 265 County St., New Bedford.[9]
