George W. Arbaugh was born about 1857. He was the son of perhaps George W. Arbaugh and his wife Malissa.
He is recorded at age 3 in 1860 with George W. Arbaugh 72 (born in VA), Melissa 34, born in OH, presumably a younger brother David T., 7 months, and Angeline Hillery, 12, born in OH. He and David were born in IN.
His mother married Hamilton Gibson in 1868 and he is recorded in the 1870 census in a household in Wabash, Jay, IN: Hamilton is 54, Malissa is 42 (born in OH), Isaac W 16, Eliza 12, Martha 4, and George W. Arbaugh was 12. All children born in IN.
He married Elizabeth Hays in Jay Indiana, 21 Feb 1879.[1] They had four children:
In 1880 he was recorded with no children in Portland IN as a laborer.
In 1900 he is still in Jay, IN, all four children are present, he is a barber and Elizabeth is a dressmaker.
In 1910 he is in Muncie, Delaware, IN. The three sons are with the family. He is working as a barber.
In 1920 he is a barber in Toledo, OH. Elizabeth is there, James is a circus performer and Harry is an auto/traffic worker.
He is still in Toledo in 1930, the proprietor of a barber shop, with Elizabeth and James and Jessie (daughter-in-law) who are both circus performers.
He died in 1933.[2] He was buried in Elliston Cemetery in Ottawa County, OH.
Detached Hamilton Gibson as father (6 Jun 2023). It appears Melissa was the wife of the 72-year-old in 1860 George Sr Arbaugh, and she married Hamilton after his death.
Death certificate gives 12 Feb 1857 as birthdate and location as Jay, Indiana. Father's name is George W. Arbaugh and mother as Melissa Gibson (but this not her maiden name, it's from her second marriage).
