James Arbuckle was a Captain in the 1812 Militia from Jefferson County.; IN. His commission was dated 4 February 1811 and signed at Vincennes by William Henry Harrison, Governor of Indiana Territory. James took oath of office on 1 August 1811. He was Captain in the 1St Battalion of the 1St Regiment of Militia in Jefferson County.

There is a deed dated 3 August 1813 in Jefferson Co. from James and Mary, but Mary does not sign. I believe she was either ill or died shortly before this deed, but the is no proof either. This deed was to John Arbuckle for $2000.00; but was not recorded until 17 July 1820. had james died?! John just turned 21,

From the "Western Eagle" (Newspaper), Lexington, Indiana Territory, Saturday, October 28, 1815 comes this story. "We regret to state, that on Saturday night last, the new and just finished dwelling house belonging to Capt James Arbuckle, about 5 miles from this place, on the road leading to Madison, was consumed by fire. Capt. A.., we understand, had contemplated removing into his new home on that day before the catastrophe happened, but for some reason he did not. We further learn there had not been any fire in the house for more than a week - it appears therefore, that this deed of darkness must have been the act of some unprincipled incendiary. Capt James Arbuckle's loss, we understand, may be computed to about five hundred dollars.

James evidently soon replaced his house, which has been dated about this time. Until a few years ago descendants of the family still lived there. In the past 10 years the house has fallen into disrepair and may be entirely gone by now.

Captain JamesArbuckle 2nd. married Francis " Fanny" (Arbuckle) Lawrence on 18 May 1815 Jefferson County Indiana. Francis was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth ( Lawrence) Arbuckle and widow of Samuel Lawrence.

Capt. James Arbuckle was called an Early Settler in Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, September 1916, Vol 12- Vol 12 No 3 page 228. James Settled and bought land in Clark County; Indiana 1808... His Military Commission now of Dr Phillips Works. in Denver, Colorado, appointing him Capt, in the First Battalion of The First Regiment of Jefferson County, Indiana. was dated February 4, 1811 and signed at Vincennes by William Henry Harrison. Governor of Ind. Territory...

A land patent was issued to James Arbuckle, June 16, 1812 and was signed by James Madison. That part of Clark County, Indiana became Jefferson County, Indiana in 1810...

Note: James Arbuckle finished building his two story Brick Home and Mill in October 15, 1815 Jefferson County, Indiana, and was said he finished building his home 5 years before he died...

He first married Mary Powell and second married Francis "Fanny" Lawrence.. and after James death and Fanny married a third time to Phillip Redenbaugh. Arbuckle, James. (242) LA- Granted to Francis Arbuckle the widow with James Jackson, and Matthew Arbuckle as her securities. 17 July 1820. Thomas Jones, Ozias Jennings and Alexander Nutt appraised the Estate.

(247) Frances Arbuckle is appointed guardian of Alexander and Susannah age 4 years, 4 months and 2 days, George Washington age 3 years, 8 months and 6 days and Anthony Wayne age 13 months, 7 days Infant Orphans of James Arbuckle, dec'd. Francis is also appointed guardian of Leviss Lawrence age 12 years, 3 months and 10 days and William Thomas Lawrence age 10 years, 4 months and 6 days, Infant Orphans of Samuel Lawrence, dec'd. (243) John Arbuckle is appointed guardian of Samuel age 11 years, William McFarland Arbuckle age 8 years, 10 months and 20 days. Francis Arbuckle is appointed guardian of Lucretia age 13 years, 2 months. all Infants of James Arbuckle dec'd.

(249) Francis is allowed for the support of heirs of the dec'd from 17 August 1820 to this date.

(255-262) 18 October 1820. Lists the inventory of James Arbuckleas taken 25 July 1820.

(282) Lists Property Reserved for Francis prior to her marriage to James, by John Lawrence for her children Ephraim and Levisa Lawrence (Note: Francis was married to Samuel Lawrence for 1811 in Franklin County Kentucky. His administrator was John Lawrence).

(286) Francis Arbuckle allowed $100 for boarding 5 children from last tera until 15 March 1821.

(273) 18 June 1821, Francis allowed $30 for boarding four children for three months. (Note: son Anthony Wayne is is never mentioned again, nor found again. I think he must have died sometime between 15 March 1820 and 18 June 1821.) On notion of Peter Smock, James R Jackson, William Fields and Harvey Fields, heirs of James Arbuckle to revoke the appointment of John Arbuckle as guardian of Samuel and William McFarland Arbuckle. Motion Over Ruled, no sufficient cause having ben shown. Francis relinquished $18.00 made at last Court Boarding and clothing William McFarland Arbuckle.

(205) 15 October 1821. Francis allowed $20 for keeping three children.

(395) 10 June 1822 (Page was crossed out. but re-recorded on page 444). Ordered that Mahala Arbuckle be allowed $42 from the Estate of James Arbuckle , she also chose John Arbuckle as her guardian until she is 18.

Early records say James Arbuckle had lived and was buried on his old Military Home stead, next to 1st wife Mary on the land where he built a House and Mill, was purshased in 1808, Section 19, Township 3 North of Range 9 East. ( burial not proved )
