Biography

Mary was born in 1846. She was the daughter of John George Arbuthnot and Eliza McKenzie.

Her father died in 1855. Mary remained in Scotland until her maternal grandparents died then emigrated to Adelaide, Australia on the barque "Adamant" leaving Plymouth on 16 July 1864. She arrived in Adelaide on 12 October 1864. She then travelled on the "Woodbine" departing on 4 March 1865 from Port of Willunga, South Australia to Eden South Coast, New South Wales, from where she went to Delegate to be reunited with her mother Eliza McKenzie.

She married George Goddard on 18 September 1869 in New South Wales, Australia.

They had at least four children:

Stephen (b. 1870)
Hannah (b. 1871)
Mary (b. 1873)
Eliza (b. 1875)

Her husband died in 1877.

Mary married, secondly, George Griffiths on 8 October 1878. (George was trained as a chemist in the United Kingdom. He served in the military in the Maori Wars (as he referred to them) in New Zealand during the 1860's, before settling in New South Wales and marrying Mary.)

They probably had the following children:

George William (b. 1879)
Sarah (b. 1881)
Susannah (b. 1883)
Isabella G (b. 1887)
George A M (b. 1889)
Colin A (b. 1892)

Mary brought up Ellen "Nell" Paske (died 2001 aged 102) who was her granddaughter. Nell understood that Mary received payments from her father well after arriving in New South Wales. (Nell's younger brother Ernest was also brought up by George and Mary.)

She did very fine needlework and a crochet bedspread made by her was given to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra as 'an illustration of the patriotism of women in Australia during the Great War' (or words to that effect). The bedspread is periodically displayed and has been featured in a number of publications.

Mary died in 1923 at the age of 76.

Research Notes

I have updated information regarding Mary Arbuthnot daughter of John George Arbuthnot of Peterhead which has altered slightly since my last email. Mary actually came out on the barque "Adamant" to Adelaide leaving Plymouth on the 16 July 1864. She arrived in Adelaide on 12 Oct. 1864. This record is in the State Records of South Australia. I have also discovered from the Kirk Records that she was born in 1846 not 1847 as I previously thought. She travelled to Eden on the "Woodbine" on 4 March 1865 Port of Willunga Sth Aust. to Eden Sth.Coast NSW from where she went to Delegate to be united with her mother Eliza McKenzie. I have found George Griffiths born (1836 - 1923) not 1837 born in Wigan, England.

The information on Table M is correct this is just an update on the dates etc. Thank you so much for all the work you have done on the Kitty Brewster Tables.
