Biography

George Arbuthnot of Invernettie, Aberdeenshire and Arbuthnot House, Peterhead. Born 1777. Baptized Peterhead 17 July 1777. Arbuthnot (1820), states that George is the son of:

He was a cotton manufacturer in Glasgow, a merchant and the first Provost of Peterhead.[1] ... He may be the George Arbuthnot shown on Table 83 as having had an illegitimate child by Helen Davidson.

George married Mary Hutchison (b. 13 April 1796 - d. 14 Feb 1837), daughter of John Hutchison of Cairngall, at Peterhad, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on the 5th of May 1816.[2]

They had:

  1. James of Invernettie and Arbuthnot House (b. 19 May 1821 - d. 31 Aug 1873).[1]
m. Eleanor Jane, d & h of Ogilvy Wills, banker, & Margaret Gordon of Auchleuchries
  1. John George (b. 19 May 1827 - d. 1855).[1]
  2. William Robert (b. 25 Jun 1834 - d. 13 Apr 1918; bur. Brockley cemetery, Lewisham), moved to London.[1]
m.1 (02 Jun 1860 St. Thomas' Stamford-Hill) Caroline Elizabeth (d. 01 Jan 1863; bur. Highgate cemetery, London, England), younger dau. of late William Marshall, esq. of Springfield, Upper Clapton and Lloyds Bank [1][3]

His wife died in 1837.

Scotland Census Event Date 1841: Recorded in Broad Street South, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland with his four children and six other individuals. Aged 60.[4]

George died on 4 June 1847 at the age of about 69 and buried in the Peterhead Old Churchyard, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland [5]
