William was born in about 1834. He was the son of George Arbuthnot and Mary Hutchison.
He lived with his parents and siblings in Broad Street, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Scotland Census Event Date 1851: Recorded as a Boarder in the household of Alexandria Elder in Albany Street, Midlothian, Scotland. Aged 16 and a scholar.
William settled in London, England.
He married Caroline Elizabeth Marshall (daughter of William Marshall) on 2 June 1860 at St. Thomas's, Stamford Hill.[2]
They had one daughter.
Sadly his wife Caroline died in 1863, and was buried at Highgate Cemetery.
He married, secondly, Helena Skilbeck (daughter of John Skilbeck) on 16 August 1866 at Enfield, Middlesex, England.[3]
They had two daughters.

His name is on a conveyance of a house called Clavingall, Belvedere, Kent which was sold 14 November 1892.
UK Census Event Date 1911: Living with his wife, 41 year old unmarried daughter Sibella and three servants in Lewisham, London, England. Aged 76.
Occupation: SECRETARY TO JOINT STOCK COMPY - TIMBER AND GENERAL MERCHANTS
William died on 13 April 1918 at the age of about 83.[4]
