Biography

James was the son of Robert Arbuthnot and Mariota Scrymgeour.[1][2] He was served as heir to his father on 11 Jan 1506.[3] He received a crown charter of the barony of Arbuthnott 29 January 1506/7, part of the lands of Inverbrvie on 4 February 1507/8, and the barony of Arbuthnott on 21 April 1512.[1][3]

Marriage and Children

He married by a contract dated 31 August 1507 Jean Stewart, a daughter of John Stewart of Balveny, 1st earl of Atholl, and his second wife Eleanor Sinclair.[1][1][3][4] There were four children from this marriage:

In 1520, James Arbuthnott, 13th laird Arbuthnott, finding himself in poor health[7] was granted permission in November to make a pilgrimage to St John of Ameance in France to seek a healing cure.[8] The pilgrimage was unsuccessful. He left a will dated 7 March 1521, and was dead before 13 March of the same year. [1][3]

Research Notes

Alexander Arbuthnot of Pitcarles and Andrew Arbuthnot have been attached to this profile as sons of Jean and her husband James Arbuthnott, but both profiles are unsourced and there do not appear to be any reliable primary or secondary sources to support these children. If no sources can be found, they will need to be detached until there is evidence they belong in this family.
