George was born in 1846. He was the son of George Arbuthnot and Caroline Hay.
In 1851 he was recorded with his family in Dingle Lane, Toxteth Park Extra Parochial, Lancashire, England. Aged 4.

He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England with a Master of Arts (M.A.). He graduated with a Doctor of Divinity (D.D.). One of Dr Vaughan's "doves" at the Temple.
George married Margaret Evelyn Luckock (daughter of Very Rev. Herbert Mortimer Luckock and Margaret Emma Thompson), on 19 November 1885 at South Kensington, London, England. Margaret was 20 years his junior.[2]
They had no children.
He was the Vicar in 1873 at Arundel, Sussex, England and was the Vicar in 1879 at Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire, England.
