George was born in 1831. He was the son of William Arbuthnot and Susan Marshall.
Scotland Census Event Date 1851: Living with his parents, older sister Susan and three other individuals at 13 Maiden Street, Buchan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Aged 19.
George was presumed to have arrived in Durban, Natal during December 1854 aboard The Lady of the Lake, under Captain H M Taylor. An entry for George Arbuthnot appears in "British Settlers in Natal: 1824-1857. A Biographical Register". Volume 1, Shelagh O'Byrne Spencer, 1981, University of Natal Press, Pietermaritzburg. They were known as the Byrne Settlers (the term Byrne Settler refers to any emigrant brought to Natal by the company, J. C. Byrne & Co.)
He died in 1856 at his brother James's property at Berryden, near Richmond, Natal. He was about 25 years of age and was unmarried.
