Biography

Sarah was born in 1859. She was the daughter of Charles James Arbuthnot and Mary Shiells.

She lived with her parents and siblings in Essex County, Newark, New Jersey.

Her father died in 1861.

US Census Event Year 1885: Recorded in the Roth household in Newark, Ward 04, Essex, New Jersey.

Sarah married Dr Philip Roth (son of Philip Roth and Carolina Holle) on 2 June 1885 at Saint Mary-Catholic, Newark, Essex, New Jersey.[1] (Her sister Mary had married Philip's brother Albert in 1884.)

They had one son.

US Census Event Year 1900: Living with her husband Philip and son in District 4 Newark city Ward 4, Essex, New Jersey, United States. Aged 37.

Her husband died in 1900.

US Census Event Date 1920: Recorded in Newark Ward 9, Essex, New Jersey, United States. Aged 50 and widowed. Also in the household was her son Philip, daughter in law Hazel and 7 year old granddaughter Dorothy.

US Census Event Date 1930: Recorded in the household of her son Philip and his wife Hazel in Newark (Districts 647-680), Essex, New Jersey, United States. Aged 76.

Her son Philip died in 1937.

She died in 1940 at the age of 80.
