George Clerk Arbuthnot was born on 7 October 1803. He was the son of William Arbuthnot and Anne Alves.[1]
He was commander of the Hythe, an East India ship of season from 1828 to 1829. Acting as an agent for Mauritius, he signed a contract with 75 Dhangar tribals of India, whereby they became indentured labourers in 1834.
He married Agnes Rait (daughter of John Rait and Elizabeth Guthrie) on 7 November 1837 at Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[2]
They had one daughter.
UK Census Event Date 1841: Living with his wife and infant daughter Emily in Walton on the Hill, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Aged 36. Also in the household was Lady Clementina Rait and 10 other individuals.
His wife Agnes died in 1842.
George married, secondly, Caroline Ramsay Hay (daughter of James Hay and Lady Mary Ramsay) on 10 January 1845 at Linden College, Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland. [3]
They had four children.

He died on 21 February 1876 at age 72.
