Biography

Jean was born about 1688, likely on the estates of Knox in the Benholm Parish, Kincardineshire. She is the daughter of the Hon. Alexander Arbuthnott of Knox, M. P. and his second wife Jean Scott, after whom she was named.

She married Samuel Stratton, a well-known and respected medical practitioner, at Montrose, Angus, on 12 Mar 1701.^[1][2]

They had a number of children:

Patrick Stratton; b. Jan 1702, bap. 20 Jan 1702 at Montrose, Angus.^[3] Followed his father and was a Surgeon-Apothecary in Montrose. Married Margaret Ouchterlony in Montrose in 1728 and had children. Died in Montrose in 1779.

Robert Stratton; b. Feb 1703, bap. 21 Feb 1703 at Montrose, Angus.^[4] He is said to have become a merchant and lived most of his lived in London. He died without marrying at Old Jewry, London, England, in 1735.^[2]

Janet Stratton; b. in Nov 1706 and bap. 6 Dec 1706 at Montrose, Angus.^[5] She married John Straton of Lauriston (Old Montrose) in Montrose, Angus, in 1728 and had children. She died at Montrose in 1763.

Mary Straton; b. Sep 1709 and bap. 19 Sep 1709 at Montrose, Angus.^[6] Mary is said to have died in childhood.^[2]

Jean Stratton; b.Oct 1710, bap. 14 Oct 1710 at Montrose, Angus.^[7] Jean is said to have died in childhood.^[2]

Samuel Stratton (although his name appears as Samull, seemingly an incorrect transcription); b. Jul 1713, bap. 12 Jul 1713 at Montrose, Angus. ^[8] Samuel seems to have been with his brother Robert in London as a merchant. He certainly traded in a variety of goods between London and Montrose. He was alive in London in 1735 when he proved his brother's will and again in 1746 when the business collapsed and he was involved in bankruptcy proceedings.^[2]

Helen Stratton; b. Oct 1714, bap. 5 Nov 1714 at Montrose, Angus.^[9] Helen is said to have died in childhood.^[2]

Katherine^[2] Stratton; b. Nov 1716, bap. 21 Nov 1716, died Nov 1716 at Montrose, Angus.^[10] Named in Stratons of Lauriston but not in the Parish record she likely died at birth.

Alexander Stratton; d. Jun 1720, bap. 11 Jun 1720 at Montrose, Scotland.^[11] He died and was buried at Montrose on 24 August 1720.^[2]
