Thomas was born in 1911. He was the son of David Arbuthnott and Mary Robertson Bone.
He emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand with his parents and siblings when he was an infant.
He was a New Zealand welterweight boxer. He competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics, but was eliminated in his first bout.
Tom married Phyllis Reeves (daughter of Cyril and Sarah Reeves) in November 1939 in Wellington. They had one daughter.
He passed away in 1995 at the age of about 84.
