Biography

Elisha Archer was born in the eastern part of Pennsylvania, the son of Henry and Mary (Randolph) Archer. When about 18 years old he emigrated to Venango County in 1800. He located on a tract of 400 acres, in what is now Cherrytree township, and commenced improving the land, clearing trees and building a cabin. In about a year after his arrival he returned to eastern Pennsylvania and married Miss Hannah Staples in 1801, and then crossed back over the mountains. The young couple moved out to his cabin and land after carrying all they had on one horse. His wife rode the horse he walked over the mountains. After a weary journey of several days they reached their new home in Venango. The hardships of pioneer life were endured. The only roads were Indian paths through miles of woods. They had to go to Pittsburgh for their needs. Finally, a mill on Pinecreek two miles east of Titusville was erected where they would carry their corn on horseback to mill. Settlers were scarce in that neighborhood then. They were raising a family of children when Elisha died in 1813.

Elisha and Hannah's children were as follows:

Mary Archer (1802- )

Elizabeth Archer (1803-1862)

John Gleason Archer (1805-1870)

Robert Archer (1806- )
