Biography

Jonas Archer was a convict on the Third Fleet.

Jonas was born about 1770 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England.[1]

Baptism 6 April 1770 • Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England: Jonas Archer, parents: James and Elizabeth Archer.[2]

Newspaper report, Manchester Mercury 5 January 1790:

"In Custody at Manchester ... JONAS ARCHER, 19 year of Age, 5 Feet 5 Inches High, dark brown Hair, brown Eyes, dark Complexion, the Hair of his Eyebrows joining together ... by trade a labourer, born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire".[3]

Newspaper report, Manchester Mercury 26 Jan 1790: Manchester Quarter Sessions: "Jonas Archer for stealing a whip and saddle out of the stable of Mr Grime of Manchester" 7 years

Arrival on the “Atlantic” as part of the Third Fleet 20 Aug 1791 • New South Wales: Convict Indent has the following: Jonas Archer, Date of Conviction: 21 January 1790 (18 January 1790 in the Transportation Register), Place of Conviction: Manchester Quarter sessions, Vessel: Atlantic, Port of Arrival: New South Wales, Date of Arrival: 20 Aug 1791.[4][5]

Marriage About. 1793 to Mary KEARNS (Irish Convict, 1793, “Sugar Cane”) (1768–1826). Note that marriage record has not been found.

They had a son James Archer, born 15 December 1794, died 2 June 1800.

1 January 1800 • Grant of land 40 acres at Mulgrave Place "Archer Farm"[6]

The 1800-02 Musters: Jonas Archer, TL number 812. Mary Kearns, TL number 813. Total land holdings of about 125 acres with 52 acres cleared, 33 of wheat and 15 of maize, 80 pigs and 3 horses. He has 40 bushels of wheat and 700 bushels of maize in store and it is noted that his wife and a child are off stores. He also had two convict servants working for him Philip Tully of Earl Cornwallis and Joseph Cliff of Hillsborough.

However it appears that he may have been in debt and lost some of his land holding, because he transfers only 25 acres to his wife Mary Kearns in 1803. It has been assumed that he left the colony.

11 July 1803 Holding Lawrence to Robert Campbell, trustee to Cox Estate: Assignment of crop on 4 acres of land on Jonas Archers farm to secure 11.9.6 (not clear).[7]

3 October 1803 "Jonas Archer to Mary Kearnes: Conveyance of endorsement 25 acres of land at the Hawks [Hawkesbury] 1 mare 1 horse & sundry pigs etc".[8]
