Biography

Corporal Robert Archer served in the United States Civil War.

Robert was born about 1835, the eldest son of Amos and Elizabeth. He joined the 23rd Alabama Infantry, Company E in 1862 as a corporal. He was captured 1 May 1863 during the Battle of Port Gibson, and taken to Alton Military Prison. There, he contracted meningitis and died on 9 June 1863. Three days later, the other prisoners taken at that battle were released from the Alton prison upon their oaths. His name is on the monument at the Alton Confederate Cemetery.
