Biography

Nancy Archer was born around 1818 - 1820 in Ohio.^{[1][2] [3][4]} Nancy married Alexander McKinley on February 28, 1836 in Allen, Indiana.^[5] They had 8 children all born in Indiana, including:

• John - born est 1837 ^[1]
• Sarah A - born est 1839 ^[1]
• Angeline - born est 1841^[1] or 1842 ^[2]
• Perry - born June 20, 1843 ^{[1] [2] [6]}
• Emelie or Emily - born est 1846 ^{[1] [2]}
• Hellen or Ellen - born est 1848 ^{[1] [2]}
• Alexander - born est 1851 ^[2][3]
• Charles - born est 1857 ^[2]

Nancy and Alexander lived in Washington Township, Allen County, Indiana with their children in 1850 ^[1] and 1860. ^[2] In 1850, there was a 22 year old laborer named Zacharia Donophan living with the family.^[1] By 1870, Nancy lived in Washington Township with only her son Alexander ^[3] In 1880, Nancy had moved in with her daughter Emiela Edmonds and her family in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana. Census records show she was either widowed or divorced.^[4]

The 1870 census recorded that Nancy “kept house”.^[3]

Nancy died May 16, 1888. She is buried in Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Indiana. ^[7]

Research Notes

The 1850 census spelled McKinley as McKinly while the 1860 and 1880 census spelled McKinley as Mc Kinley - in both cases the first names of her husband and children align with other records. Their marriage license has McKinley. The 1850 and 1880 census spelled her name as Nancey while the 1860 and 1870 census both used Nancy.

Unclear note - Emiela’s name is spelled differently on many census documents which list her family members. Her age was noted as 32 during the 1880 census which lines up more with her sister Hellen/Ellen’s estimated birth year of 1848.

Nancy’s place of birth is noted as Ohio in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census. Oddly the census of 1900 notes Indiana as mother’s place of birth in the entry for her daughter Emily Edmonds and son Alexander McKinley while they noted her birthplace as Kentucky in 1910.

Possible lead to explore - There is a John Archer in Ohio who marked he had a daughter in the right age range to potentially be Nancy in the 1830 census.
