Biography

Matthew + Janet Archibald Tombstone

Matthew was born in 1745 to Samuel Archibald Eleanor Taylor[1]. It is disputed whether he was born in Londonderry, Ireland or Londonderry, New Hampshire, where his parents immigrated from Londonderry, Ireland, reportedly in 1757 when Matthew would have been 8 years old.

He married Janet Fisher in 1767[2] in New Hampshire. They had 12 children.

"Matthew was born Mar. 9, 1745 . Son of Samuel Archibald and Eleanor Taylor. Married Janet Fisher daughter of Samuel Fisher and Agnes Wilson in 1767 at Londonderry, New Hampshire. He was a Farmer/Tanner. He came to Truro with his parents in 1762. He was the oldest son of Samuel and Eleanor. He returned to New England and married there to Janet Fisher in 1767. He was 22 and she was 17. He and his wife returned to Truro and raised their family. He carried on farming and tanning and was part owner of the Mills on the south side of the river. He was eminently pious and from his careful use of the Bible the hill where he lived took it's name as "Bible Hill". Matthew was named a justice of the Peace and became a coroner for Colchester District in 1786. (Information from the Directory of the Members of the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia 1758-1958 Public Archives of Nova Scotia) Matthew died at the age of 75 on Jan. 18, 1820, and his wife died at age 93 on Mar. 5, 1843. He lived at Bible Hill, Colchester Co., Nova Scotia. He was buried at Robie Street Cemetery in Truro."

On 29 July 1779 purchased a slave Abram, bought in Pictou from Matthew Harris. view bill of sale [3] "Matthew Harris, farmer, of Pictou records the sale of his slave 'Abram' to Matthew Archibald, tanner, of Truro. The sale price is £ 50. Abram, about 12 years old, was the child of Harris's slave in his former house in Maryland."

He died in Truro in 1820 and was buried at Robie Street Cemetery in Truro, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada. [4]

His obituary read, "At Truro, on the 18th inst. in the 75th year of his age, after a short illness, Matthew Archibald, Esq. one of the first English settlers in that township. In his public character both as magistrate and a representative in the general assembly of this province, he was remarkable for his impartiality, zeal and integrity, and in the more private walks of life, as a man and a christian, he was not less noted for his regular conduct and piety. He has left behind him a wife, eleven children, sixty-nine grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren, in all one hundred and six." [5]
