Biography

Eric was working as an accountant for a bank in Toronto when he enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on the 31 Jan 1917 as no. 1099293 of the 256th Battalion. He was described on his enlistment form as 5'8 3/4", fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair. He arrived in England on the S.S. Missanabie on 7 Apr 1917. His military history notes that the 256th Battalion was known as the 10th Canadian Railway Troops from 31 May 1917. He was "killed in action" on the 28 Dec 1917. His military record has the notation: "this soldier was one of a working party engaged in maintaining Light Railways. During heavy enemy shell fire Sapper Ardern was hit in the stomach by a small piece of shell and instantly killed." At the time of the casualty his unit was located at Dickebusch. His body was interred in Ridge Wood Military Cemetery in Plot 2, Row T, Grave 14. in Voormezeele, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
