Salvatore Ardizzone is born 28 April 1879 in Piana dei Greci, Italy, according to his petition for naturalization.[1] He is the son of Antonino Ardizzone and Giuseppa Cuccia. He is younger, born around 1885, based on his reported age at marriage.[2]
When he petitions for American citizenship, Salvatore says that he emigrated under the name Giuseppe Ardizzone on 10 October 1898 on the SS Karamania.[1] There is a matching entry on the manifest:
9. Gioachina Ardizzone, 26 (b. 1872), single, tailor, connected with a bracket to #10, joining Antonino Ardizzone in Genessee, Louisiana
10. Giuseppe Ardizzone, 17 (b. 1881), single, tailor[3]
Salvatore Ardizzone, age 35 (b. 1885 in Italy), son of Tony Ardizzone and Josephine Cuccia, marries Giovannina Schiro, age 23 (b. 1897 born in Italy), daughter of Domenico Schiro and Antonina Carbone, on 27 April 1920 in Los Angeles. Joseph Ardizzone is one of the witnesses. [2] The date of their marriage is a match for the date Salvatore gives in his naturalization petition. The petition tells us that Giovannina arrived in New York a week before her wedding in Los Angeles.
Salvatore and Giovannina have six children: Josephine (1921), Nena (1922), Jacqueline (1924), Anthony (1926), Minnie (1935), Marie (1937). All the children were born in Los Angeles.
Josephine is born 9 May 1921.
Nena is born 6 August 1922.
Jacqueline is born 2 January 1924.
Anthony is born 28 January 1926.
Minnie is born 5 May 1935.
Marie is born 1 August 1937.
On 3 March 1940, when Salvatore petitions for citizenship, he is a farmer, age 64. He is white, with a fair complexion, blue eyes, and gray hair. He stands 5’7”, weighs 150#, and has lost the first finger of his right hand at the second joint. Josephine, Minnie, and Marie live with him. Anthony is in the Navy Reserves. The affidavit of witnesses is signed by Steve J. Guidera, service station operator living at 1914 Mozart, Los Angeles, and Crestina Petta (his married sister), a farmer living at 11102 Macvine Ave, Sunland, CA. They’ve known him since 1 April 1939 to be continuously residing in Los Angeles since that time. [1]
