Biography

Excerpted from the newspaper column Challenge of Genealogy by Marie Wise: [1]

"Most of the ARDOIN families in Louisiana descend probably from Francois, son of the French Canadian, Etienne Ardouin of Montreal, and his wife Marie-Josephe LaPointe.

Migrating to the future United States in c1770, this couple settled first in Detroit where three children were born; later moved down the Mississippi River to the Illinois country, residing probably at Kaskaskia Post where (?) son Francois and three daughters were born.

These four married; Francois moving to Louisiana before 1796 to Grand Prairie area of the Opelousas District.

Francois and his wife, Louise Quebedeaux had a family of 8 boys (1 died young) and 7 girls, each surviving male begetting from 8 - 13 off-spring. By the 1870s, twenty families (sons and grandsons) directly descending from Francois comprised practically the entire Ardoin clan in St. Landry and Evangeline Parishes." [2]

Francois Ardoin was baptized on 25 Feb 1769. This was recorded in a church register in Berthierville, Québec, Canada.[3] It has been reported that he was born in Illinois Country, then part of the Province of Quebec. Some sources give the location as De Islas Nigras,[4] other sources give Kaskaskia,[1] or Kaskaskia Post, all in present day Illinois.[2] [5] However, the baptismal register suggests that he may have been born before the family moved south.

He married Laurine Honorine Quebedeau on 2 Feb 1793 in Pointe Coupee, Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana.[6] [7] Their children include:

  1. Marie Ardoin (1793–Deceased) [8]

  3. Helen Ardoin (1797–Deceased) [10]

  13. Hypolite Ardoin (c1823–Deceased) [21]
  14. Julie (Ardoin) Ortego (1823–1880)

Francois died in 1834. [22] His Succession (or probate) dated Dec 1844 shows the following heirs: [23]

  1. Honorine QUEBEDEAU
  2. Marie m. Lucas FONTENOT;
  3. Ellene m. d. Louis CLOTEAU;

Ardoin-327 and Ardoin-123 appear to represent the same person because: Same death information and spouse.
Are there no pictures of Denis Hardouin, Etienne Francois Ardoin, Francois Sr., Francois Jr., Achille Ardoin? I have my great grandfather Jules Ardoin, Achille Ardoin's son. Also I have Pierre Hardouin my 7th great grandfather. If anyone could be of any assistance, I would greatly appreciate it. I also need all their wives. Any help . Thank you.

Ardoin-264 and Ardoin-123 appear to represent the same person because: These represent the same man, the husband of Laurine QUEBEDEAU. The difference in birth dates is just a typo - they were married Feb 2, 1793 (I have 1792, but that could be a multiple-date year). I also have them married in St. Francis Church in Pointe Coupee, but I haven't double-checked the Baton Rouge Records to verify.

The records from PRDH have Francois born in Berthierville, Quebec, Feb 24, 1769. See family #37728 if you have access. It's possible that the earlier Francois could have died, and a later son named Francois. But Francois is the youngest son given in the PRDH records.
