Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Zenon Ardoin is a part of US Black heritage.

Zenon was born in 1824 according to his age in the 1870 census.[1] This census listed the household as follows: (all born in Louisiana)

Household - - - - Sex - - Age
Zenon Ardoni - - Male - - 46
Louise Ardoni - - Female - 36
Marilite Ardoni - Female - 17
Selima Ardoni - - Female - 15
Neville Ardoni - - Male - - 12
Luciuz Ardoni - - Male - - 10
Elisa Ardoni - - - Female - 9
Alida Ardoni - - - Female - 6
Melisa Ardoni - - Female - 2
Selima Ardoni - - Female - 0

The family is listed as mulatto and this may explain why they are not found in an earlier census record and why many of the records for his children do not give a surname for the mother.

Children with Judith Lenis

  1. Caroline Audoin who married John Joseph on 10 Feb 1870 in Ville Platte.[2]
  2. Celima Ardoin who was born about 1845 based on the 1870 census[1] and married Moses Jason in 1873.[3]
  3. Lucius Ardoin born about 1860 according to the 1870 censu[1]s and married Rosalie Alfred in 1882.[4]

  1. Marcelite Ardoin born about 1853 according to 1870 census [1]and married Louis Wilson in 1871.[5]
  2. Adelia Ardoin who is likely the 9-year old listed as Elisa in the 1870 census[1] and who married Charles Richard in December 1874.[6]

Children with Eloise Guillory

  1. Celina Ardoin born November 1870.[7] She is likely the Celina Ardoin who married Paul Thomas in 1891.[8]
  2. Zenon Ardoin born 3 Sep 1871.[9]
  3. Melisa Ardoin born about 1868 according to the 1870 census[1] and married Onesphore Lede in December 1886.[10]

Slave Owner

He may have been enslaved by Francois Ardoin (1773-1834). A succession (what probate is called in Louisiana) reportedly names Zenon as one of his slaves, but it is not known if there is a link to view the succession records.[11]
