Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Marcelite (Ardoin) Wilson is a part of US Black heritage.

Marcelite was born about 1853 based on her age in the 1870 census. Her marriage record gives her father's name as Zenon Ardoin (misread as Jueon in some places) and her mother's name as Marianne, but with no surname. Other sources show the mother as Marianne Dautre.[1]

The 1870 Census[2][3] shows her at age 17 in the home of her father and step-mother in Ward Four of St. Landry Parish, Louisiana.

She married Willis Wilson on 3 Aug 1871 at the church in Ville Platte, Louisiana.[4] They had at least nine children.[5] Those known:

  1. Theodore Wilson (1872–1954)
  2. Marie Idee Wilson (1875–bef.1900)
  3. Buddy Wilson (1877–1966)
  4. Francis (Wilson) Thomas (1882–1961)
  5. Austin Wilson (1887–1967)

The 1880 Census[6] shows her at age "20" with her husband and two children in the 7th Ward of St Landry Parish, Louisiana.

The 1900 Census[5] shows her at age 47 with her husband and two children in Police Jury Ward 7, Justice of Peace Ward 15, Ville Platte Town, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. This census states that she is the mother of 9 children with 4 still living.

The 1910 Census[7] shows her at age 53, widowed, and living with her daughter Francoise Thomas and family in Police Jury Ward 7, St Landry Parish, Louisiana.

The family moved to Oklahoma about this time.

The 1940 Census[8] shows her at age 89 in the home of her son Buddy and his family in Hamilton Township, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma.

Marcelite died in 1940 at age 87 and is buried in Southwest Cemetery in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma.[9]

Marcelite appears to have a full-blooded sibling named Adelia, who married Charles Richard in 1874.[10]

Slave Owner

Family tradition is that the family made the trip from Louisiana to Oklahoma with the aid of her former owner. But that person has not yet been identified.

Ardoin-287 and Ardoin-56 appear to represent the same person because: The have the same husband, and the same son! Otherwise, there is very little info on Ardoin-56 to go on!
